Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a hardy biennial plant that is easy to grow and can thrive in a variety of conditions. Here are the steps to plant and care for common mullein:

Planting Instructions for Common Mullein

1. Selecting a Site:

  • Sunlight: Choose a location that receives full sun. Mullein can tolerate partial shade but grows best with plenty of sunlight.

  • Soil: Mullein is adaptable to different soil types but prefers well-draining soil. It can thrive in poor, rocky, or sandy soils.

2. Planting Seeds:

  • Timing: Plant mullein seeds in the spring or fall. If starting indoors, plant them 6-8 weeks before the last frost date in your area.

  • Preparation: Prepare the planting area by clearing weeds and loosening the soil. If planting in a pot, ensure it has good drainage.

  • Sowing Seeds: Scatter the seeds on the soil surface and press them down lightly. Do not cover them with soil, as they need light to germinate.

  • Spacing: Space the seeds or seedlings about 2-3 feet apart to allow for their large, rosette growth.

3. Watering:

  • Initial Watering: Water the area thoroughly after planting the seeds.

  • Ongoing Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until the seeds germinate, which usually takes 10-14 days. Once established, mullein is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering.

4. Caring for the Plants:

  • Thinning: If the seedlings are too crowded, thin them to ensure proper spacing. This helps prevent disease and promotes healthy growth.

  • Mulching: Apply a thin layer of mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Weeding: Keep the area around the plants free of weeds, especially during the first year.

5. Growth and Maintenance:

  • First Year: In the first year, mullein will form a large, fuzzy rosette of leaves.

  • Second Year: In the second year, it will send up a tall flower spike that can reach 6-8 feet in height. The yellow flowers will bloom throughout the summer.

  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms and prevent self-seeding if you don’t want it to spread excessively.

  • Support: Tall flower spikes may need staking to prevent them from falling over in windy conditions.

6. Harvesting:

  • Leaves: Harvest leaves during the first year for use in herbal remedies. Pick them in the morning after the dew has dried.

  • Flowers: Collect flowers as they bloom. Dry them for later use in teas or tinctures.

7. End of Season Care:

  • Seed Collection: If you want to collect seeds, allow some flower spikes to mature and produce seed heads. Harvest the seeds when they are dry and brown.

  • Plant Removal: After flowering, the plant will die back. Remove dead plants and compost them, or leave them to provide habitat for wildlife.

By following these instructions, you can successfully grow common mullein in your garden, enjoying its tall, striking presence and potential medicinal benefits.
