How to Harvest Mullein

Writer's picture: Evans Organics Evans Organics

Harvesting mullein (Verbascum thapsus) involves careful timing and technique to ensure the plant’s medicinal properties are preserved. The best time to harvest mullein leaves is in the late spring or early summer when the plant is in its rosette stage before the flowering stalk appears. Choose vibrant, green leaves free from damage or discoloration. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut the leaves near the base, leaving some foliage behind to allow the plant to continue growing.

If you are harvesting mullein flowers, wait until the plant is in full bloom during the summer. Pick the flowers early in the morning after the dew has dried, as this is when they are most potent. Lay the harvested leaves or flowers in a single layer on a clean, dry surface in a well-ventilated, shaded area to dry completely before storing them in an airtight container. Always ensure you are harvesting from areas free of pesticides or pollution.
